One of the best things about Christmas, in my opinion, is the holiday traditions that my family has. These traditions are a little weird and some have nothing to do with the holiday season but, they have become something I look forward to every Christmas. If you’re looking for a new holiday tradition try some of these on for size. My family is admittedly a little strange so our traditions may not work for everyone but, either way just remember to have fun with your family
Games, Games, and more Games
What is Christmas without a little competition? My family has played a game called LCR for as long as I can remember and each time we play things get intense. The game involves zero skill and can be bought for like 5 dollars on Amazon making it a pretty convenient game for Christmas. I swear my sister cheats because she wins at least once every year when we play it. While I love LCR, my favorite game we play is cards against humanity. After the little ones go to sleep, all of the adults and older cousins come together and play some of the most twisted games of Cards Against Humanity. Not only is this game fun but, it also shows you who the sickest person in your family is. Both of these games are super easy to play and involve a lot of laughs.
Horrible Horror Movies
A unique tradition at our house is watching awful and I mean AWFUL horror movies every night leading up to Christmas. Sometimes these movies are Christmas themed, but more of the movies are just randomly selected horror movies on Netflix. For some reason nothing is better than sipping hot chocolate while watching embarrassingly bad horror movies with your family. It makes no sense and I get that but you should give it a try. If you’re looking for a suggestion “Krampus” the horror movie is a must see.
Matching Christmas PJs
If I didn’t put this in here my Mom would actually kill me so here it goes. Every year without out fail, the entire family wears matching Christmas Pajamas on Christmas day. Yes, all fourteen members of our family get together and wear watching clothes. On the surface it seems dorky and it totally it is. However, it’s just one of those quirky things our family does that makes Christmas day feel special. Plus, seeing the pictures of us throughout the years in our PJs is pretty funny. So there you go Mom, you made the list of my favorite holiday traditions.
Festivus
Now my family cannot take credit for this tradition because it comes from Seinfeld but, it is one of my Dad’s favorite holiday traditions. This completely fake holiday is celebrated on the 23rd of December and it has become one of those quirky holiday tradition we have adopted. Essentially Festivus is made up of two parts, the airing of the grievances and the feats of strengths. The feats of strengths aren’t really practiced in our house. They include various displays of strength, as the name would suggest. However, the airing of the grievances is a pretty funny part of the Festivus tradition. Essentially it just allows you to put out into the open any ill feelings you have towards another family member. It is a very interesting little display and most of the grievances are just jokes so no one leaves with their feelings hurt. OH!!! Did I mention we decorate a Festivus pole?
The Day After
One of our last traditions is on the 26th which is the day before everyone from our family heads back home. The girls all go out shopping at the local malls and boutiques. While the guys all go out and do something random. Last year we went to a shooting range and fired some pistols and the year before that we went to an airsoft arena. Each year we switch up what we do and it’s a nice last family outing before everyone heads their separate ways. We even tossed around the idea of going boar hunting once which would be interesting to say the least. But in the end it doesn’t matter what we do because it’s really just about spending time together.
No matter what you do for Christmas, just remember to have fun with your family while you can.
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you have a nice holiday season. If you need me I’ll be watching awful horror movies.
