During the holiday season, every Christmas movie known to man is aired on TV. The iconic food featured in the films brings out the inner child in all of us as we wonder what it would be like to try it. Here are some sweet treat ideas to make this Christmas jolly and bright!

1. Enjoying Hot Cocoa on the Polar Express

A train on the way to Santa’s workshop already sounds like a dream come true. What makes us even more envious of these lucky children is the fact that dancing waiters serve them hot cocoa. This jolly drink has become a staple food item for the holiday season. Here are some ideas that can kick it up a notch:

  1. Add egg nog. This makes thick, creamy cocoa.
  2. Melt chocolate chips at the bottom of the mug and then mix the milk and cocoa powder.
  3. Add a teaspoon or two of maple syrup. It makes the cocoa sweet and thick.
  4. Take a candy cane and a stir it in the hot cocoa. This will give you peppermint hot cocoa just as good as Starbucks.
  5. If you like the taste of chocolate-covered cherries, add two teaspoons of maraschino cherry juice to the hot chocolate.

2. Unlimited Pizza and Ice Cream

When our parents are away, the idea of fending for ourselves is daunting. Kevin McCallister experienced the ultimate home alone—twice. His solution: a personal cheese pizza and an unlimited ice cream sundae bar. Merry Christmas, ya’ filthy animal.

3. Buddy's Sweet Spaghetti

Elves have only four food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup. His spaghetti concoction is iconic. Take some spaghetti and mix in the syrup. Top it off with chocolate pop tarts and any other candy you can scrape together. The sweeter the better!

4. A Chinese-Style Christmas

If your family is anything like the Parker family, a Christmas turkey might not cut it this year. Instead, have some Chinese food and a roasted duck. Just…don’t carve the duck at the table....or shoot your eye out.

5. The Grinch's Who Hash and Pudding

“He took the Who’s feast, he took the who’s pudding, he took the roast beast. He cleaned out that ice box as quick as a flash. Why, the Grinch even took their last can of Who hash.”-Dr. Seuss

The pesky Grinch took a lot from the Who’s that Christmas Eve, which he returned the next morning after his heart grew three sizes. Hopefully he returned the Who hash in time for breakfast. Who hash is minced potatoes, any leftover vegetables and corned beef. Take these ingredients and stir it in a pan with butter until the concoction is golden brown. A side note: I don’t know about where to get roast beast, but I do know that Who pudding is vanilla with red and green M&M’s.

I hope that everyone has a merry and safe holiday season! Find the real Santa and avoid the imposters, make sure that you can hear the bells on his sleigh, count your blessings instead of sheep and a million other holliday movie puns!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
