With the approach of summer and graduation, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to tackle more books on my shelf. Of course, some of the books on my list are new additions to my shelf, but nonetheless. Here's to the end of the school year and inching towards my reading goal!
1. The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey
After being recommended this book and having read Yancey's work before, I decided this was right up my alley. It follows Will Henry, an assistant to the Dr. Pellinore Warthopre, a doctor who studies monsters, or monstrumology. This novel/series explores the dark side of humanity and questions if we become the monsters we hunt.
2. Descender (Vol. 1: Tin Stars) by Jeff Lemire
The cover alone made me buy the first volume of this graphic narrative, but reading more about it made me need to read it. It follows a young robot boy, TIM-21, living in a universe where androids are outlawed and every planet is crawling with bounty hunters! With no surprise to anyone, I'm once again drawn to an interesting dynamic and comparison between human and machine.
3. All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders
What's a book list without a little magical realism? This story follows two childhood friends who part ways during mysterious circumstances that involve magic powers and time travel but meet again as adults. The world is falling apart, and they must both use their specialties to either save the world or help destroy it. I'm hooked by that alone.
4. Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli
Ever since this book was announced, I was ready for it. Especially with the recent release of the movie "Love Simon"! It follows Simon's friend Leah, a girl drummer who finds herself too reserved to show her friends her art and tell them she's bi. Things in her friend group fall apart, and Leah isn't sure how to keep everyone together.
5. Circe by Madeline Miller
The author of "Song of Achilles" just came out with another book, and I couldn't be more excited! Circe is born among the gods, but fits in better with mortals. Despite believing she had no abilites of her own, she discovers witchcraft. Her newfound magic makes Zeus wary of her, and she is banned to an island. Yet she still finds herself tangled in trouble and facing the gods.
