Whether your summer entails laying poolside, beachside, at an office downtown, or at the library, summer is the perfect time to pick up a new read. Here are some favorites from my library that you should add to yours if you haven't already.

1. "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert

If you know me, you know this is at the top of my list. For those of you who have a constant case of wanderlust, "Eat, Pray, Love" is for you. Following the end of a broken marriage, Gilbert finds herself leaving her New York life behind to discover herself in places she never expected to end up. The author takes her readers along on a journey full of new countries, cultures, relationships, and a lot of wisdom.

2. "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho

Otherwise known as soul food. A story of a young boy determined to make his way to the Egyptian Pyramids will touch your soul like never before and leave you in tears, despite the somewhat slow start. Endless amounts of life advice are hidden within these pages.

3. "Tattoos on the Heart" by Gregory Boyle

Written by a priest in LA, this novel will open your eyes and your heart to some extreme issues that many people turn a blind eye to, and many don't even know exist. Father Boyle devotes his adult life to living alongside of and guiding gang members; providing them with work, renewed faith, and purpose.

4. "For One More Day" by Mitch Albom

After a retired MLB player hits rock bottom, he is granted one more day with his deceased mother. Like all mothers, she has taught him some of life's greatest lessons, and it seems that he needs a bit of a refresher. You'll finish this one in no time, as it's nearly impossible to put down.

5. "Looking for Alaska" by John Green

I took this book on a trip to Key West several years ago and it still goes down as one of my favorites. A perfect book to take to the beach and escape the real world with. The main character, Miles Halter, is sick of his depressingly boring life and ends up at boarding school in Alabama. Although, school isn't his main focus while he's away. John Green keeps readers on the edge of their seats with a whirlwind of a teenage love story unlike any other.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
