One of the most exciting things about sorority life is a chance to take on the role of big sister. For many sisters, it is the first, and one of the biggest, responsibilities she will have in her chapter. Not only do you have an opportunity to expand your family, but you also gain the ability to pass on the values of your sisterhood -- the same ones your big sister taught you not so long ago.
However, before all that responsibility comes the excitement of crafting hell, also known as Big-Little Week. Prior to this, you must squeeze your brain of all its creativity, splatter its contents via glitter onto everything you can get your hands on, and continue to cross you super-glued fingers that your new little sister likes your work as much as you do.
As great as it would be to be able to come up with all of your fantastic gifts for your equally fantastic little on your own, sometimes a little nudge is required to get the cogs moving. When it comes to gifts for your newest addition, there are five items with which you cannot go wrong:
1. Canvases
While you may have to wait and get to know the personality of your little sister before you make these, some -- featuring your letters and things that you enjoy -- can be done beforehand. This may be difficult for those sisters who do not count themselves as artistically inclined, but take your time, do not overwhelm yourself and quit, and do your best -- your little sister will appreciate it and you no matter what!
2. Blanket
You can purchase a pre-made blanket and get your letters stitched on it, or purchase fabric and make a knotted blanket yourself. Every little gets cold once in a while, so it is both cute and useful!
3. T-shirts
This is another gift that is useful because, as a new member, it is always nice to get a few new shirts to wear around campus that represent your new sorority. Believe it or not, this does not have to be an expensive venture. Ask your big for shirts, go online and buy some, or even make some stitched-letter shirts for her on your own!
4. Badge Box
I know that, as a new member, I was so worried I was going to lose my badge. Wipe away such worries by making your little a badge box! Purchase a small wooden box from any local crafting store and decorate it to your liking with paint markers, and -- voila! A badge box fit for any little.
5. Quote Jar
One of my personal favorite craft ideas is a quote jar. Go to your local thrift shop and pick up a mason jar with a lid and some pretty ribbon. Fill the inside of the jar with all of your favorite inspirational and funny quotes, and instruct your little to pull one anytime she is having a bad day, with the promise of free refills and a hug. It shows her that you truly care about her, and is super easy to make!
Happy crafting!
