As a freshman at Georgia College and State University from the inner city of Atlanta, I have gone through a lot of culture shock to say the least. Slowly, however, I have begun to appreciate the small town, rural feel of Milledgeville and have grown to love the environment. Here are the five things I love most about Milledgeville.
1. History.
As a student living in the heart of Milledgeville, I am surrounded by massive, old mansions. My route to class allows me to see both the old governors mansion and the Cline house where Flannery O'Connor grew up. Andalusia (the farm where Flannery O'Connor spent her last days) is also located not far from Georgia College and State University.
2. Location.
Many people think that Milledgeville is located in the middle of nowhere. Actually though, there are a lot of very popular attractions surrounding Milledgeville such as Macon, the Chalk Mines, and the Greenway.
3. Central State Hospital.
Milledgeville is famous because of the Central State Hospital. Central State Hospital is known as the biggest insane asylum in the world, opened in 1842 and closed down in 1994. The hospital covers more than 2,000 acres and is known for having too many patients, resulting in mistreatment of the clients. Many claim that this site is haunted and is a huge attraction for both students and tourists.
4. The nightlife.
Because Milledgeville has a huge university, the nightlife around the campus is always a lot of fun. There are lot's of boutiques, restaurants, and cafe's that attract lot's of customers. Popular restaurants like Barbarito's, Buffington's, and the Brick gain a lot of business from both Mocal's (Milledgeville local's) and students of Georgia College and State University.
5. Small town feel.
One of the nicest things about Milledgeville is that everyone knows everyone. People are exceptionally kind and caring, and you always pass multiple people you know whenever you go out. Georgia College and State University isn't as big as the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech, so there aren't as many students- so you're bound to have classes with friends.
