College is a time to learn about life - what to like, what to dislike, and where to go with it. For many students, it's an opportunity to try many things for the first time in hopes of developing their independence. And often times, these four years are chances upon chances to prove not only others, but also oneself, wrong and right.

Many schools offer students the ability to take their freedom to the next level in a foreign place. Traveling makes us feel vulnerable all over again. It's an opportunity to create your own lesson plan outside of the classroom and to learn from your mistakes without any outside help to make them right again. I believe that traveling, even with a group, is the ultimate way to find your independence.

Based off of affordability, safety, and available activities, here are the best places to find your independence -

1. University of Cape Town - South Africa

Sitting at the foot of Table Mountain's Devil Peak, UCT has been establishing bonds between prominent figures in Africa's community and students from over 100 different countries around the world.

Make sure to go on a safari in St. Lucia, swim in the Indian Ocean, and stand at the famous Cape of Good Hope while you're there.

2. The University of Barcelona - Spain

Even if you've taken French all throughout high school, Barcelona and the Spanish culture are vibrant and full of history and culture. Barcelona is a great place to study international business and European studies as it is a center known for both its cosmopolitan modernity and cultural preservation throughout time.

Gaudí-designed landmark church Sagrada Família and Park Güell are also must sees.

3. Melbourne University - Australia

Melbourne University prides itself on being Australia's number one university in the heart of, what students voted to be, the second best city for students in the world.

You'll have to go to the city's central spot, Federation Square, take in the sights of Port Campbell National Park, and contemplate some works of art at the National gallery while you're in the exciting mecca that is Melbourne.

4. Fudan University - Shangai, China

It's no secret that China's technological and social advancements are turning heads all over the world. Continuously ranked in the top 100 universities of the world, the prestigious Fudan University is located directly in the country's biggest city and financial core.

Taking a trip on Maglev, the world's fastest train, strolling around in a Zhujiajiao, a traditional Watertown, walking along the living the living museum that is the infamous Bund are just a few of the things to do in Shangai.

5. University of Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

If you're looking for adventure, this is the perfect place for you. By far the most affordable option on the list, Kuala Lumpur is valued for its marriage of tradition and innovation. The university is known for its technical school based in Malaysia's up-and-coming capital city.

While in the small country of Malaysia make sure to venture to the top of the iconic Petronas Towers, climb a little of Mount Kinabalu and sip some afternoon tea in the previously British-owned Cameron Highlands.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
