5 Best Parts About The Holidays

There are so many reasons we should enjoy the holidays and show gratitude to our loved ones.

The holidays are one of the best times of the year for almost everyone across the globe. We get to snuggle up with our families, catch up on our sleep schedules, look forward to a new beginning in the new year, and everything else in between. I think we take the best parts of the holidays for granted, which usually are the little details that we do not recognize at first. I wanted to take some time to remind everyone of these little details that we miss, so that this holiday season we can not only acknowledge them, but also show gratitude towards them.

1. Family Time

Now everyone's family is a little extra to say the least, but come on. You just can't help but love them and all of their weirdness. You would be bored out of your mind if your family did not have the personality and corkiness that they have today, so be grateful. Go around and tell every family member how much you love them this holiday season. I'm sure that they want or need to hear that more than you know.

2. Your Mom's Cooking

Okay I think we can all agree that your mom's (or dad's) cooking is the best thing to happen on this planet. Just the thought of a home cooked feast brings water to your mouth. Thankfully this is one of the wonderful pleasures of the holidays. Show some gratitude to the chef this year because I bet he or she does not fully understand the greatness of their cooking.

3. SLEEP

If there is one thing in this world that everyone will always need more of, it's sleep. Personally speaking, I am a second year college student that has forever said goodbye to a normal sleep schedule, so when winter break rolls around I take full advantage of sleep. Also if you are a college student then that means the holidays also allow you to sleep in your own bed.

4. Holiday Parties

We all go to them and we all love them. Rather it be your basic tacky christmas sweater party or a New Years Eve Ball, we can all agree that holiday parties are the best. They are that little "pick-me-up" that gets everyone in the holiday spirit. You are surrounded by vibrant people who you most likely love and care about, and the food is always da bomb. If the holidays tend to make you gloomy I highly recommend to go to as many holiday events as possible because they will certainly bring you some holiday cheer. If you feel like you will feel lonely in a room full of people, bring a date! There should be no reason for you to not enjoy the happiness that holiday parties can bring.

5. Presents, Presents, & More Presents

Presents are hands down one of the best parts of the holidays, and something we can all show a lot of gratitude for. For me, I enjoy the giving much more than receiving. There is just something about walking through the mall and finding that perfect gift for someone, and then you can hardly wait to see their face on Christmas morning when they open up your present. Giving is one of the most priceless, rewarding acts we as humans can do for one another, so get out and give this holiday season. Give to more than just your family and loved ones because there are plenty of people in this world who do not have the opportunity of having a Christmas filled with presents and love, but you can change that. Also, receiving can bring a lot of joy as well to us because we can finally stock up on the necessities we need. Rather it be toothpaste to new underwear, we all have the basic essentials we need more of.

All in all the holiday season should always be a time we look forward to because it brings so much more than just these five things listed. It is a time to congregate as communities or with our loved ones and do something special for one another or for people who need it more. Make this holiday season count and get out there people! Give back to others, show gratitude, go have too much egg nog at the christmas party you've always wanted to attend but could never find the time, but overall enjoy this time that we have together. I hope that everyone can have as much joy and appreciation that this little boy had when he found an avocado to be one of his presents. Happy Holidays!

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
