With school starting up again, the end of summer and fall are some of the best times to get out and explore Durango. The hikes are beautiful and challenging, just don't get stuck in a thunderstorm! Here are a few trails that make for a great excursion.
1. Skyline Trail
Skyline Trail is accessed at the very end of Jenkins Ranch Road. The trail snakes up the ridge, through brush, and eventually into a nice forested area. The trail connects up with Raiders Ridge, which provides an amazing view of Durango and the Animas River Valley.
2. Hogsback
There are multiple access points for the route up Hogsback, all starting from the West end of town. You can climb up and back on the face, or make a loop and climb up the back. This trail is best for intermediate and above hikers, as it is very steep and there are many big cliff exposures.
3. Sailing Hawks & Animas City Mountain
Sailing Hawks has some cool rock formations that are popular for climbing. Animas City Mountain has great views of Durango and the surrounding area. Take the East rim for views of Durango, or explore the West rim for views of the backside. Both tails are accessible from either West 4th Ave. or Juntion Street.
4. Engineer Mountain
Access this popular peak from the top of Coal Bank Pass. It takes about an hour to drive North on Hwy 550 from Durango. There is a dirt parking area just as you crest the top of the pass. The route up is on Pass Creek Trail. The trail climbs steeply through the forest to above tree line. From here you have the option to summit Engineer Mountain. Make sure to bring food, water, and other supplies since the hike begins at 10,600 feet!
5. Campus Trails
The Fort Lewis College mesa has tons of trails that are perfect for a lunch time walk in between classes. View Durango and roam with the deer. You can make a lap around campus on the Rim Trail, and even go out to Lion's Den. Check out the Frisbee Golf course behind the Bader/Snyder dorm complex, or the Nature Trail easily accesses town.
