Boston is known for many things, from major historical events to it's sports teams. Another thing that the city is known for is the movies that take place there. The city provides the setting for some of the best movies in recent memory, giving a distinct tone to each movie, especially crime movies.
1. The Departed
The movie that earned director Martin Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar win is also one of his best. The crime drama, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, and Matt Damon, takes place all over the city of Boston. The story about crooked and undercover cops was one of the best films of the 2000s and won Best Picture in 2007. Everything about this movie is done right, from the casting to the directing, and is a modern day crime classic.
2. Good Will Hunting
This movie helped win the late Robin Williams his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and made Matt Damon and Ben Affleck household names. The heartfelt drama stars Damon as a genius janitor and co-stars Williams as his therapist. The film has stirring performances and a heartbreaking script, providing the viewers with one of Robin Williams' best films ever.
3. The Town
The Ben Affleck-directed crime drama centers around a Charlestown robber who wants to get away from his crime lifestyle, but is constantly strung back in. The film co-stars Jeremy Renner (in an Academy-Award nominated performance) as Affleck's best friend and Jon Hamm as the FBI Agent after the Charlestown gang. Affleck's direction shines particularly in this movie.
4. Black Mass
This period piece crime drama stars Johnny Depp as James "Whitey" Bulger, one of Boston's most infamous gangsters of the 20th century. This movie rests solely on Depp's frightening performance as Bulger. Even with an all-star cast, Depp outshines everyone as he completely steals the show.
5. Gone Baby Gone
Famous for being Ben Affleck's directorial debut, this movie follows a private investigator who is assigned to a case of a missing girl. The movie, starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman, has a fantastic script which showcases each actors' skills. The ending to the film is still shocking for first-time viewers and leaves the audience with more questions than answers.
