As an avid hiker, I believe that I have been completely blessed by being born in Virginia. There is an abundance of good hikes within this beautiful state, ranging in difficulty and scenery. Although this is not a comprehensive list of all of the best hikes in the beautiful state of Virginia, here are five of my favorites (in no particular order):
1. Crabtree Falls
Crabtree Falls is a beautiful hike. Located in the mountains of Nelson County, Virginia, Crabtree Falls offers a variety of experiences. As you follow the falls to their origin, you will be able to experience scenic views, gorgeous waterfalls, and serene places to stop and meditate. If you are looking for a peaceful hike that is not too strenuous, Crabtree Falls is the place to be.
2. Humpback Mountain
Many UVA students have done this steep hike before. Located in Afton, Virginia, Humpback Mountain is a steep hike that overlooks the towns of Crozet, Afton, and Charlottesville. This scenic view allows hikers to see the vastness of the Appellation Trail and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be prepared for a steep grade. However, the quick torture is worth the beautiful reward.
3. Mary's Rock
A beautiful hike located in the Shenandoah National Park, Mary's Rock offers a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Even though this hike is 3.7 miles long with a pretty steep grade at times, the view atop of Mary's Rock is worth the hike up. Also, my personal preference is to hike the mountain when it is covered in a blanket of snow.
4. Rose River Loop
Located in the Shenandoah National Park, Rose River Loop is a four mile loop that holds two beautiful waterfalls. One is very easy to see, as it is right at the beginning of the trail. The other, however, can only be reached by following the trail until the end. Reaching the second waterfall provides a sense of fulfillment, along with an urge to hop into the pool of water below.
5. Devil's Bathtub
The Devil's Bathtub--also known as Devil's Fork Loop Trail--is probably the most intriguing hike on this list. Located in Scott, Virginia, the Devil's Bathtub is a two mile hike to one of the most intriguing spots in Virginia; a gorgeous waterhole located in the middle of the woods. The hike to the bathtub is only two miles long. However, if you are wishing for an adventure, try hiking the entire seven mile loop.
