This short list consists of some indie rock/punk bands that you can rock out to or maybe make you feel emotional. This is really a list of who I've been listening to in quarantine and think you should too.
1. Destroy Boys
Now this band has been rising the ranks for a while, but I couldn't help to put them on here just in case anyone is missing the greatness of Destroy Boys. This group is perfectly loud and each song is packed with a punch that will surely let you release some of your built up anger. Check out 'I Threw Glass In My Friend's Eye and Now I'm On Probation' to know exactly what I'm talking about.
2. Parquet Courts
Are you mad at the social climate of the world, but still want to dance and have fun? Parquet Court's 2018 album 'Wide Awaaaaake!' is what you are looking for. This indie-punk band has created musically groovy songs that'll get you jamming, but lyrically describes how we are all feeling inside. One thing that Parquet Courts does well is create this since of fire and rage through this retro-feeling album. Through politically charged songs like 'Total Football' and to songs about life's uncertainties like 'Freebird II' there's nothing not to like about Parquet Courts. Thought if you are looking for more classic punk you will find that in their older albums.
3. Car Seat Headrest
You know how you always wanted your life to feel like a coming of age movie? Well, Car Seat Headrest makes one's ordinary life feel cinematic. This indie rock band fronted by Will Toledo creates songs that feel epic and his way of story telling is like no other. Many of their songs are as long as 11 or so minutes, but I'll tell you there are never parts of their songs you want to skip. Through Car Seat Headrest's albums like 'Teens of Denial' and 'Twin Fantasy' you'll find your self along the ride of a beautifully constructed story that'll make you feel heart broken, deserted, and sometimes even hopeless. I have to suggest such songs like 2018's 'Nervous Young Inhumans' and if you are looking for something a little less depressing 'Destroyed by Hippie Powers' is where it's at.
The Garden
Now this one has many mixed opinions, but trust me this is not a band you'll ever forget. This experimental rock band formed by twin brothers will make you question what is the definition of punk? These brothers have received some backlash from the community, but overall have become lovable. Their mixture of art punk and experimental rock create something really enjoyable and is in general just fun to listen to. An old classic 'California Here We Go' is a great example of what this band likes to put on. At first listen you are somewhat confused, but intrigued, and soon you'll be putting it on repeat. Their new album 'Kiss My Super Bowl Ring' is just another example of The Garden's break from unconventional music and it's definitely worth the listen.
5. Twin Peaks
No, no not the legendary t.v. show. This indie rock band from Chicago is one of my favorite bands out there, so you could say I'm saving the best for last. Definitely one of the best bands to see live, Twin Peaks puts energy not only into their wild performances, but into each and every song they write. Their music can be chaotic and loud or sweet and soft, from their expensive, diverse discography you can tell this band was made to make music. My favorite to turn on in the morning to wake me up and get me feeling good and ready for their day. Their latest album from 2019, 'Lookout Low' shows how their music has refined over the years, but still is the life of the party.
