Since the late 80s indie music has been a favorite for so many music lovers. It's refreshing, vibrant, and never lacking in character. The diverse genre has never been one to conform to mainstream audiences, and I believe that's what is so appealing to so many looking to get away from your average pop music. This list of fantastic indie artists are must know for any indie lovers like myself, as well as people looking for a taste of the quirky genre!
1. The Decemberists
From a widower killing off his children (The Rake Song), to an 1800s soldier in the French Foreign Legion (The Legionnaire's Lament); this indie folk rock band loves to tell some curious stories. Formed in Portland, Oregon in 2000, the quirky band quickly made a name for themselves among hipsters everywhere in the following years. With everything from a killer harmonica, to some imaginative lyrics and amazing vocals, The Decemberists deliver some of the best indie tunes I know.
2. Vampire Weekend
Despite the name, the band has little to do with vampires, but everything to do with great music. The indie pop band from the Big Apple leaves you feeling like you're in an endless summer with their world beat and baroque pop influences. Out of their three albums, two are Grammy nominated. Album, Contra was nominated in 2011 for Best Alternative Music Album, and their album "Modern Vampires of the City" brought home the same award in 2014. Vampire Weekend is a must have on any indie lovers playlist.
3. She & Him
In case you didn't know "500 Days of Summer" and "Elf" actress, Zooey Deschanel, happens to also be one half of the successful music duo, She & Him with M. Ward. The pair have a way of making the saddest lyrics sound upbeat and sunny. With songs like "In the Sun" and "Gonna Get Along With Out You Now," you can't help but fall in love with these two.4. Of Monsters and Men
Like The Decemberists, Of Monsters and Men is another great indie folk rock band, with imaginative lyrics of their own. From Iceland, formed in 2010 the band has written songs such as "Little Talks" and "Dirty Paws," and their debut album "My Head is an Animal" peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 in 2012. Their whimsical songs bring you to other little worlds, and their live performances are absolutely fantastic (you can take my word for it), which is why you must listen to this group ASAP.
5. Modest Mouse
Unlike the rest of the bands on this list, Modest Mouse has been around since the early 1990s and have been heavily influenced by bands such as the Pixies and Talking Heads. Along with some of my absolute favorite songs such as "Float On" and "Missed the Boat" the band has some undeniably creative album names, such as "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" and "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" (which also happens to be all around fantastic albums) to name just a couple. You're undoubtedly missing out if you haven't listened to such an incredible band.
