We've all ironically said "OMG I'm sooo basic!" while in the drive through of Starbucks or putting a big t-shirt over track shorts. But what makes something basic? Some say it's because everyone seems to do/have it, but doesn't that mean it's universally enjoyed? Here are some awesome things that people are afraid to enjoy in fear of being 'basic'.
1. Chacos
Step aside, Toms! There's a new trending shoe in town. These sandals are versatile, adjustable, and all around super comfortable. The hashtags #chaconation or #chacotan can be found all over social media, displaying the brand's vast array of styles, colors and the zigzag tan line you end up with after months of wear. If you can't bare to part with your beloved Chacos once summer is over, you can slip on some socks and become part of the Socko movement! You get all the comfort of your favorite shoe with the coziness of fuzzy socks to keep your toes warm. So flaunt your feet! Wear those shoes. Don't let anyone tell you that they're just a pair of sandals!
2. Hammocks
Specifically Enos, but since Eno's rise to the top, many other brands like Kammock and Hummingbird have been shown more love as well. Because if the wannabe basics have learned anything, it's that there is almost always a better brand that isn't the one everyone talks about. When put to the test, a doublenest Kammock can hold 100 more pounds than a doublenest Eno, and has a greater surface area. Keep this in mind when the next 'big thing' arrives.
3. Yeti Tumblers
Keeping your drink in a perfect temperature stasis is key when on the go. Adding ice to a normal cup of your favorite drink will eventually lead to a watered down mess. With an insulated tumbler like Yeti or SIC, you can have your ice and keep it too! I see at least 5 being sipped out of during class and even more at parties. They're incredibly convenient and even customizable! Between engraving, stickers, or monograms, you will be able to pick your cup out of the line-up.
4. Pumpkin Spice Anything
The bane of many anti-basics existences; the pumpkin spice craze that ensues during the fall season. Coffee, candles, lotions, fragrances, it's all pumpkin spice. Though not my personal favorite, the flavor is not This is the biggest 'basic' thing any girl can partake in. When you think of the word basic, you picture a girl in a sweater, leggings, boots, and drinking a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. It's a popular fall flavor! Just like peppermint or gingerbread is a popular Christmas flavor! All seasons have their 'thing' and this is fall's 'thing'. Fall is such a universally idolized season, it makes sense that such a yummy drink would become such a testement to being basic.
5. Embracing Your Inner Basic
So maybe you're a chaco-wearing, hammocking, drinking-a-PSL-out-of-your-Yeti kind of basic. That's awesome. Enjoy the things that so many other people enjoy. The stigma of being basic is that you're unoriginal or that you only like what everyone else likes, but everyone is different. Just because you have some particularly 'preppy' or 'mainstream' items doesn't make you any less unique than the next person. Now go out and hammock, it's a beautiful day to be basic!
