Going to college, I instantly began craving the simple rice and Asian dishes that my mom would make back at home. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, I ate cupcakes for dessert instead of the traditional lotus-flavored mooncake I ate every year for the holiday.
During Chinese New Year, I ate my food with a fork and knife instead of the chopsticks I would have undoubtedly used for my Chinese New Year noodles.
Over the course of the school year, regardless of how many hamburgers, bowls of ice cream, pasta dishes and Crossroads burrito bowls I consumed, I never seemed to be satisfied with the food. Thankfully, I’ve found my fair share of Asian-inspired restaurants that have reminded me a little bit of home.
1. Poke Sushi Bowl
Who doesn’t love raw fish, topped with a combination of ingredients (from seaweed to mango to rice), and glazed with a delectable sauce? Tucked away on the Corner, it’s the perfect Japanese place for a quick meal.
2. Doma
This is truly a little gem. Although a little far (especially for first years that don’t have access to a car), but completely accessible through the Trolley, it’s absolutely delicious. It has all the traditional Korean dishes that the restaurants in my hometown offered, such as bibimbap and bulgogi.
3. Kuma
Another little spot on the corner, this Korean/Japanese restaurant offers Asian dishes from sushi to ramen to traditional Korean dishes. It has a very large menu, and it’s the perfect distance away from central grounds.
4. Thai Cuisine
Although only accessible through car, my Pad Thai was definitely worth the trip. Pho, Drunken Noodles, Mango Sticky Rice and Thai Tea are just a few of the items offered on the menu. Great for a cold, winter night!
5. Peter Chang
You haven’t tried this place out before? Drop. Everything. And. Go. Now. Located near Barracks, it has all the tangy, traditional Szechuan dishes that I need to satisfy my Chinese food craving.
