Let's be honest, it's a lot harder to be an adult than it seems. You have to pay bills, work, find a place to live, clean, invest, save for the future, and way more. Personally, I struggle to even live a basic college life so I'm not sure post graduate life will be very nice to me. If you're like me and need a little help learning the ropes on how to be an adult, here's five great apps to get you started.
1. You Need A Budget
This app and desktop program's main goal is to help you succeed. You Need A Budget syncs with your bank accounts to create a set budget each month. Their four simple rules: give every dollar a job, embrace your true expenses, roll with the punches, and age your money. You have a free 34 day trial and if you like the results, it only costs $5 a month from then on. The app is extremely simple and I've already started to be more conscious about what I'm spending. And to top it all off, it's free for college students.
2. Acorns
Acorns is the perfect, free app for those who see the importance of investing and want to try, but have no idea where to begin. This app syncs with a bank account or debit/credit card of your choosing. It offers you two choices: either invest a set amount every time or round-up. Rounding up is when the app will round up your purchases to the nearest dollar and invest the change. For example, if you spend $3.45 at Starbucks, Acorns will round the charge up to $4.00 and invest the $0.55 in portfolios, varying in risk. I like this app because it's an automatic process and I can choose to have very little risk for a beginner like me. Now you don't have to feel so bad about that fifth coffee this week.
3. Out of Milk
This app is great for anyone living with roommates, family, or anything but alone. Just organize and create your grocery lists which sync to all members of your household with the app. When an item is added or checked off, everyone's list will update. This eliminates forgetting items when shopping or housemates that often leave the refrigerator empty. Another free download, Out of Milk is easy to navigate, efficient, and perfect for a busy household trying their best to be adults.
4. Open Table
As an adult you're going to need to learn how to reserve a table at a restaurant. After college, Wendy's is no longer a well-deserved dinner out. Impress that blind date with a well-prepared reservation and earn some adult brownie-points, and potentially a real brownie. Open Table sponsors over 32,000 restaurants for bookings and doubles as a reputable review source. You might as well spend that hard earned money on a dinner you know you'll love, and Open Table is how you'll find it.
5. Evernote Scannable
Although the least fun of this list, Evernote Scannable is the most practical, gratuitous app for post graduates and functional adults. Never lose an important receipt, business card, or piece of paperwork again. Evernote scans your documents into the app in one press of a button and you have everything you need at your fingertips. College students can also get the most out of this app by using it to take pictures of and store notes or save contact information collected at all of those networking events.
This is just a short list to get you started. There are so many useful apps out there that were created to make your life easier. Take advantage of your resources and be smart about your decisions and you'll survive just fine in the real world. Good luck!
