Lent isn't just a time for people to give something up for 40 days to learn a lesson. We are meant to get something out of the process of Lent. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. Sometimes giving something material up isn't as fulfilling, so here is a few alternatives for giving up chocolate or soda for Lent.

1. Try to be more consistent in something.

Whether it's attending church, bible study or going to the gym, focus your attention on being consistent for one thing throughout the 40-day period.

2. Do something everyday.

Rather than giving something up for 40 days, try to do something new each day. This will allow yourself to be more open and willing to try new things, as it is for only a short period of time.

3. Focus on others.

Often when Lent comes around people think about themselves and things that they can give up. Try to focus on someone else. Help them accomplish their goal. You will be able to grow and get something out of their success.

4. Pray more.

People assume you always have to give something up for Lent. However, people often forget the reason behind our participation. Instead, try working towards finding and understanding the true meaning behind this 40-day period.

5. You can give up anything.

It doesn't have to be a material object that you give up. You do not have to give up something that you can physically see. Try working towards being less judgmental, gossip less, or focusing less on the negative side of things. If you get in a good habit of this, you might be able to change your mindset for the long run.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
