With talk of the recent New York abortion law, the government possibly defunding Planned Parenthood, and seemingly a million other pertaining to the topic floating around the media, it would be hard to avoid chatter on the subject.
I know that personally, I have been scrolling through my social media and stumbled across a misinformed person spreading information about abortion that simply isn't true. Without addressing these issues, it is impossible to discuss it at all.
1. Abortions cause health problems later on
This is absolutely false. There have been claims linking abortions to everything from fertility to breast cancer. In truth, abortions do not affect one's health later on in life.
There have, in fact, been more studies showing a linkage between breast cancer and natural births.
2. Abortions are dangerous
Abortions are medical procedures and if you watch Grey's Anatomy, you know that all medical procedures present risks. However, in comparison, abortions are quite safe. They are safer than natural birth and are safer than getting a colonoscopy.
3. Late-term abortions are cruel
This rumor is one I have seen a lot on social media and I feel that it needs to be addressed directly.
Women who have late-term abortions want to have a baby. They do not want to carry a child into the third trimester just to get rid of it. Late-term abortions are performed for medical reasons. They occur if the health of the child or of the mother is at risk.
4. Women who get abortions regret it afterwards
Simply put, most women who get abortions are confident about their decisions.
In North Carolina, facilities that perform abortions are required to counsel the women and talk with them about the procedure to make sure that they are making the correct decision for themselves.
5. Abortions are hard decisions
There are many reasons that women would get abortions and all of them are valid. People tend to believe that women that get abortions have to struggle with the decision. Abortions can be easy decision and great experiences for women who need them.
It is time to end the stigma surrounding abortions and recognize the truth behind the medicine.
