4 Questions To Ask Before You Commit To A Study Abroad Program

In This Article:

Prior to committing the study abroad program of your dreams there are so many things to consider. Here are the top 4 questions to ask yourself before committing to your program!

How Long Is The Program?

Study abroad programs have lots of variability in the length of program. Some last a year while others are only 5 weeks. It is necessary to consider the length of the program you wish to take part in prior to picking your program.

How Will The Program Advance My Degree?

Make sure to consider how your studies abroad will influence your studies at home. If the study abroad program you are considering will not give you credit for courses you will need to take in the future or give you an opportunity to advance your career it may not be the best program for you.

Will you have to take courses prior to committing?

Some study abroad programs - especially those in countries that don't speak English - it is required to take courses to be sure you are prepared for the curricula during the program. For example, if you are planning to take a study abroad in Spain you may have to take an introductory Spanish course or two before the trip.

How much does the program cost?

Depending on the length and destination of your study abroad, the cost can become fairly substantial and it could be hard to get scholarships. Determine prior to committing if you have the money to spend on the trip and enough money to spend when you get there! Also be sure to consider the exchange rate!

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time.
