Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership

There are so many great places to live while attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There are always the usual instances that happen at any college dorm. Granville Towers is a co-ed residence hall where there are too many of these occurrences to ignore. As they say, it’s “the Place to be at UNC,” so let me tell you why that’s true.

1. It’s either 78 or 64 degrees with no in between.

2. There’s that one meal swiper that’s everyone’s favorite.

3. You cannot take the elevator to or from the second floor (or even third).

4. Smoothie day is the best day of the week.

5. You better not have too complicated of an order at the Agora grill.

6. It’s always awkward when you ask what floor in an elevator to a fellow hallmate.

7. Sneaking bananas (and anything else possible) will never be shameful.

8. The awful stench of the “cut through dumpsters” is torture.

9. Who came up with the idea of outdoor stairwells?

10. Seeing everyone you don’t want to see in the Agora.

11. The joy that comes with getting a package alert email.

12. Wondering if the fire alarms are actually going off.

13. Being able to hear everything in the next room over, and across the hall, and in the hallway.

14. The incredible proximity of Chipotle (and Toppers).

15. Everyone still getting Toppers delivered.

16. The always confusing rivalry between the three towers.

17. Did you even know that we have a Gift Wrapping Station?

18. There’s never a good time to go to the gym if you’re trying to use an elliptical.

19. It’s hard to leave the Agora without a mini Styrofoam cup every single time.

20. Constantly getting off one floor too soon on the elevator.

21. The people in the laundry room who will take your clothes out of the machine and put them on the floor.

22. Which light switch turns on the mirror and which is the bathroom?

23. Those select people that bathe in the tub shower.

24. The lack of conveniently located outlets.

25. There may be a competition for who can fit the most friends in one room (and the elevator).

26. Jealousy of the people living on the first and top floor because of their higher ceilings.

27. The construction blocking the direct route to Franklin.

28.The provided desk chairs giving chronic back pain.

29.The study rooms are only good for watch parties and the loudest people on the hall.

30. Always meeting new people in hall meetings.

31. Awkward elevator rides and the random things you find in them.

32. The Granville Government’s excessively large budget and what they choose to do with it.

33. When the Uber drivers never quite know how to find you.

34. The miserable one-ply toilet paper.

35. Forgetting to bring your own paper to the printer.

36. People in South Tower bragging about their three elevators versus everyone else’s two.

37.The group of guys gathered around the TV in the Agora anytime there’s a game.

38. Always debating which route to class is faster from which tower.

39. The Granville plague is all too real.

40. Dust bunnies. Everywhere.

41. Begging other people to fob you into the building.

42. Late Night Agora is always more tempting from Friday to Sunday.

43. There are incredible people who work at Granville Towers.

44. R.A.s put up with so much ... or do they?

45. Running into the same people every single day on the way to class.

46. Appreciating the little things about living in "G-Vegas."

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
