There is no city like Manhattan. To make it here, you have to be tough, sharp-minded and extremely motivated. People arrive with all kinds of goals and work tirelessly to make their dreams happen. Yet no place comes without its challenges, and the city is no exception.

New York City is filled with a number of unique quirks that only a "local" can have the pleasure of experiencing. (Have you seen the video of the pizza rat yet?) Most of these are unpleasant, some are gross and a couple are just bizarre. Ultimately though, once you've made it as a real New Yorker, nothing feels as good as being one of the elite.

1. You never ever call New York City “The Big Apple.” Or refer to it as “The Empire State of Mind.”

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
