If you watched the 2016 Oscars, you would know that "Mad Max" won a ridiculous number of the categories and Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his well-deserved Oscar, and made an iconic speech regarding the Earth and climate change. You would know that Chris Rock hosted and addressed the elephant in the room: #OscarsSoWhite. But most importantly, you would know that Lady Gaga sang her Oscar nominated song, "Til It Happens To You," which she co-wrote for the documentary that talks about college campus rape in the United states, "The Hunting Ground."
This was a defining moment for the Pop Queen in the eyes of America. Gaga did more than just perform; she made a statement in a way that brought out so many emotions that we didn't even know we had. We sat in awe with tears in our eyes and witnessed a moment that will inspire change. She wasn't putting on a front, or being someone else. As a victim of rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse, her delivery of the piece was more than emotional. Gaga stood after the song was finished and clasped hands with the other survivors. Lady Gaga mentioned in a tweet that she would be thinking of Kesha while performing the song in order to give her the support she needed during her time of injustice. She wanted to give a voice to all of those victims who deserve happiness and justice.
