Maymester...the infamous time of summer classes. This is the time when it may seem like you are an over achiever, but Maymester isn't quite that at all. This is the time when you just don't want to move out quite yet and be stuck at home with your parents hovering over you every day. It's a time to relax from a full load of school work and ease into the summer. As a bystander, I have found out why many people decide to stay. It seems to be the best of both worlds for a college kid.
Who doesn't want to stay in the college environment for the summertime? The funny thing is, I'm not even doing Maymester. I have been here for about a week, but I've noticed a few things that seem to be the main reasons that keep students here.
1. Reason to go out on a Monday
The perk of staying at school during this time, is you can use the excuse "it's summer" about every day. You feel like partying with your friends on Monday, why the hell not. Or you don't have class till noon on Wednesday, let's lay by the pool all day. It is still summer, so why not party every day. Students are young, living in their apartments, and enjoying the freedom of having no parents around. People use these 4 weeks to excuse their 24/7 partying.
2. I'm getting credit while I'm here
The best part about living at school during summer time, is as much fun as you'll be having, you can still please the rents. If your parents aren't on board, it usually isn't going to happen. But you are taking classes or a class aren't you? So it looks better to them then slacking around at home doing absolutely nothing. This is a great excuse to tell your parents, so they let you live at school for a few more weeks.
3. It's only 4 weeks
Only 4 weeks, of rushed material, usually for a swimming class, is way too doable. So this gives you plenty of time to spend an hour or two at class then have plenty of time to really enjoy the summer. Time management is key in college right? Well perfect. You have to spend maybe 6 hours a week going to class, and then you have over 100 hours to spend on non school related things.
Maymester is a stellar option for a few weeks of your summer. Get out in early May, take an extra class, then get to party with all of your friends at the pool. And then after that we just continue the summer festivities until August. Happy summer.
