Welcome to the year 2016, where comic books are almost extinct - not to worry though, it's a new age with newfangled wonders such as the marvelous web comic. Even big names like Marvel and DC have capitalized on the craze complete with apps for your smart phones. But I'm not here to tell you to read Spiderman, that's a given, everyone should read Spiderman. Duh.
But what about lesser known comics? I delved into the depths of the interwebs to compile this list for you, in no particular order. (Click on the images to see the comics!)
1. Monster Pulse
Magnolia Porter has created a wonderful world of science and mystery where the organs of children are transformed into monsters. Yes, you read that correctly. One mysterious day, Bina Blum finds that her heart is ripped from her body and becomes Ayo, the large and lovable human heart. The comic is reminiscent of Tim Burton style children's movies - an equal mix of horror and heart warming characters.
2. The Meek
Due to the complex and beautiful art style, there isn't a whole lot to read of The Meek yet - each panel takes quite a long time I'm sure. If you're more inclined towards fantasy and not knowing what the hell is going on, this one's for you. It plunges right into the thick of it with us following a strange green haired girl that has the ability to control nature itself. Angora is joined by a drunken companion named Pinter and together they are on a journey to reach civilization through the jungle. Meanwhile, a war is going on between two nations and an emperor is plagued by some sort of ..... creature. If I say any more I'll spoil the plot - go read it! The art and story will suck you in.
3. Mare Internum
Set on Mars, Mare Internum is a futuristic wonder filled with strange creatures and dark secrets. Our protagonist is Mike, a severely depressed man, who is thrown into the depths of the planet on a search for his missing robot friend. There's little human to human interaction throughout the story once the ball gets rolling. However, as Mike quickly discovers, there are other things to converse with on Mars.... With art just as beautiful as The Meek, I would highly recommend this beautiful work.
4. El Goonish Shive
This comic has been around for almost as long as webcomics have. It started all the way back in 2002 written by a high schooler and is still continuing today. If you can get past the slightly cringe worthy jokes and art style of the earlier comics, you'll eventually find yourself falling in love with this weirdly named comic. Full of whacky slapstick fun, science fiction, fantasy and everything inbetween, El Goonish Shive has a little something for everyone between its virtual pages. It's a personal favorite of mine as its based around transforming people into different genders and creatures - including the transformer himself who comes to realize something about himself due to all the craziness...
These are just the comics I keep up with, but there's plenty more to read out there! Google around and explore, someone's creation is dying to be read out there.
But just remember...
