4 Ways To Motivate Yourself This Semester

“New Year, New Me”, or at least that is what we tell ourselves every January. Too often one of the things that tops the list of new year’s resolutions for most students is doing better in school. Especially as the semester goes on it gets harder and harder to keep up with the work load and to actually make that resolution come true. But to make things easier, here are 6 tips to keep yourself motivated this semester and make it your best one yet.

1. Study in different places.

Studying for most people isn’t a whole lot of fun. Especially if you are studying for a class that you aren’t exactly a fan of it can be really easy to get bored and discouraged. However even if the studying part isn’t interesting this doesn’t mean that your surroundings can’t be. Switching up where you studying can keep you from getting bored and can give you an incentive to keep up with your school work. Get creative with your locations but places like Starbucks or a table outside can be great places to get some work done. Just be careful to pick a place where you know you can focus and won’t be distracted by outside noise

2. Have a study buddy.

Studying with friends can be a great way to do work without feeling like you are sacrificing socializing. Having a study buddy that will keep you accountable and will help you out when you need help in a certain class can be a great way to improve your grades. However, it is important that you pick this buddy wisely and make sure it is someone who you can sit down and actually do work with instead of just talking to them the entire time.

3. Try listening to non-lyrical music.

This is a tip that might not work for everyone, but you might want to try putting some music on in the background while you are studying or doing work. Ideally this music is something without lyrics (for examples classical music) so it is less distracting and it might be best when doing work that doesn’t involve reading. Music can help making studying or doing work seem more fun and less boring.

4. Get in a habit.

The hardest part of studying or doing work is just starting. You can make this easier however by getting into the habit of studying on a certain day or time. The consistency will make it less of a struggle to start doing your work and having a certain day or time set apart just to do your school work will make sure that you reach your academic goals this semester.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
