Getting involved in high school can dramatically impact your overall experience in the four years you have there. By being engaged in extracurricular and cocurricular activities, you can meet new people and discover what you're interested in. Here are four ways to get involved in your school's community and enhance your time in high school!
1. ASB
ASB (Student Government) allows you to be involved in the bigger events in high school. ASB gives you leadership opportunities that can look great on college applications as well. Planning rallies, organizing football games, and coming up with dance themes are some of the things you could be involved in. Promoting events and a better school environment are the most important things you can do in ASB and for your school. If you are looking to be more involved in an influential, planning sense, then ASB might be right for you.
2. Newspaper/Yearbook
High school journalism programs can give you a new perspective on your school. In these programs, you can become involved in multiple things on campus, without actually being a member. When covering football games, you may end up helping the pep squad move their boxes. When covering a food drive, you may find yourself volunteering with them by the end of the event. Being in journalism can allow you to appreciate your school for everything it offers by being tasked with covering it all.
3. Clubs
Clubs allow you to find what you're interested in. If you're interested in law, then I suggest joining Mock Trial or Model United Nations. You may not be able to explore that interest with the class options at your school, so it is your job to seek out what you want to be involved in. Community service clubs can help you show colleges that you are a well-rounded student who is involved in their community and cares for it. By getting involved in clubs, you can follow your passions and add to your applications, a win-win.
4. Electives
Expand your interests by taking electives that may be out of your comfort zone. Electives like choir can provide you with a second family and introduce you to the world of performing you might have never known. The opportunity to choose your electives in high school should not be taken advantage of. Take the risk and push your boundaries and who knows, you might find something you never knew you loved.
