There are many that claim to be music lovers, but when asked about the variety of music they listen to they fall short of some great genres that are commonly dismissed by the general public. Although it is unrealistic to expect the general public to openly listen to some of the more underrated genres out there, it is important to educate and inform. There are 4 genres that are hardly given credit, some for being too old such as the classics and opera or for being too artsy and unconventional such as broadway and movie soundtracks.

1. Broadway

This genre is often classified as the overdramatic side of music that very few people give a chance to listen and appreciate it. The reality is that this is a great genre, all the emotion, and the unconventional lyrics that when put together create a beautiful story, help the individual express the emotions that the characters in these shows portray and that the audience relates to. Not to mention, broadway songs make a killer playlist for long drives and amazing car karaoke.

2. The Classics

Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, and Chopin these are some of the great composers that have changed the music world as we know it. Today this genre has almost entirely been forgotten, but these composers knew what they were doing when they wrote this music. Listening to one of these symphonies can either get you in the zone for an intense study session or can move you to tears with the beautiful instruments used create these compositions.

3. Movie soundtracks

This genre has a wide spread of subgenres that can cater to the wants of anyone willing to listen. Movie soundtracks can vary from movie scores to contemporary songs or songs that were made to play a crucial role in moving the story plot of the movie along. For the sake of this article, we will be focusing on the songs that move the plot along these are most commonly seen in Disney movies. The songs we all grew up watching in our favorite movies and that we memorized by heart should not lose their magic once we pass age 12. On the contrary, as we get older we should be able to appreciate these songs on a deeper level and attach meaning to it that we could not understand at a young age.

4. Opera

This is the older sister of the broadway genre. Like broadway, opera also tells a story in a way it is the Shakespeare of theater music. Telling the story of tragedy and romance, even some comedy, these songs have very much the same effect that broadway songs do. Much like the classics, opera set the foundation to they style of storytelling that has transferred into the music the later genres.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
