4 Tips For Nesting In Your New Room
Katie Maloney

It's the time of year when most college students are beginning to think about their new dorm room or apartment or house that they will be moving into. "Nesting" or making the space your own is vital to creating a room that will make you feel comfortable, relaxed and rejuvenated. So here are some tips for nesting in your new dorm or apartment.

Stick with natural colors

Keep big items, such as your comforter/duvet, dresser, desk, in natural or neutral colors like blacks, browns and whites. This makes your space feel bigger and cleaner. By no means does this mean you cant have color in your room, but keep it for accent pieces, like pillows, tapestries and artwork. Also staying with a color theme for accent pieces makes your room look more cohesive. I personally like blues for a bedroom because blue is a calming color.

Start out Organized

I know that moving seems like the biggest pain in the world, but being unorganized after a move is worse trust me. Take the extra time when unpacking to carefully decide where you want to put things. Invest in small organizational boxes and bins (Pinterest has amazing ideas for using cheap bins and making them look chic). And any seasonal or less used items that you push way under your bed or the back of your closet keep note of! I personally have a note on my phone titled "sh*t under your bed" and "sh*t hidden in your closet." This will keep you from losing things that seem useless now but might come in handy when you really need it, like tools and winter clothes.

Clean out while you unpack

My mom always says "if it doesn't bring you joy get rid of it" and she's so right. Take the time while your unpacking to decide if you really need each item. My rule for clothes is if you haven't worn it in the past six months get rid of it, unless it is a seasonal item. If you stick to these two rules you can seriously de-clutter your space before you even settle in which is always a good things. Donate what you can and throw out the rest.

Personalize

This one seems obvious but I don't just mean hang a few personal pictures. Almost everything can be personalized and not even in an obvious way. Like my mom says, everything in your room should bring you joy. So go out a pick a candle you personally really like. Buy that little decorative plate that really calls out to you at the store. Keep a collection of knick-knacks from places you've visited. If you don't want to spend money on decorations personalize them by making them yourself. Canvas isn't too expensive and getting creative and then displaying your work of art is good for your soul. Or consider making a dream/inspiration board, there are tons of ideas on
Pinterest for this too!

Moving into a new place is stressful but always exciting. You get a fresh start at decorating your room and making it all your own. Follow these tips and remember that you can't be wrong, after all it only matters that your room makes you happy.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
