It's garage sale season, and there couldn't be anything more exciting (except, of course, the simultaneous farmers' market season). Garage sale-ing is similar to thrifting in the sense that you have to look at items with a unique lens and look in sections you may not normally peruse in retail stores.
Here are a few tips to help you score big at garage sales this season:
1. Buy Men's Clothing
Both in season and out of season clothes are abundant at sales, usually. It'll probably be hot out when you're shopping, but try to get in the mindset of needing winter wear, too.
Don't limit yourself to only buying things in your size, either. Buy over-sized button-ups that give you more material to work with. Men's button-ups are great because they can be worn normally or made into a fun top.
2. Always Check Out The Shoes
For some reason, some people think buying used shoes is gross. Um, excuse me? Shoes are washable just like clothes are, and you'd really be missing out on killer steals if you passed up the shoes at garage sales.
Some shoes at sales are brand new, too, but you never know until you look.

These are quite literally a dime a dozen at garage sales because they're usually old and perceived as frumpy, but they're definitely making a comeback and I think they're adorable.
You can keep them as the classic mom jean,
Or cut them straight across with fabric scissors into a "U" shape to make shorts for the summertime.

Sometimes there's a t-shirt at a sale that's just too big or would just look better with a few inches chopped off.
You can either cut the bottom of these shirts and leave them roll a little.
Or for a less permanent alteration, you can just tie it into a cute little knot in the front or back.
Whether you go every weekend or not, you're sure to come across some gems this summer, even if it's only at a few sales. Make it a point to keep these tips in mind when you do go garage-picking, though.
Happy bargaining!
