4 Tips and Tricks to become a Modern Day Deity

Being a modern day "Goddess" is something I strive for every day. Trying to be positive in times of trial, pushing myself to make the best decisions for the most amount of people I can. Being a "Goddess" to me means that you do the right thing all the time, even if it is hard. You put others first, and strive to help everyone you can. On this note, here are my four ways to become a modern day "God" or "Goddess".

1. Stand up for what you believe in

By doing this you will ultimately make a lot of friends, but at the same time you will make a ton of enemies. Playing neutral will never get you anywhere in life. By standing up for what you believe in, you will feel happier. You will not be a poser simply because you are doing what you say you want to live by. Having a moral code and actually living by it makes you a "God" or "Goddess" in your own right. You don't have to follow pop cultural norms. If you see something that isn't right, make a change. We live in a world where so many people are afraid to make enemies that we don't live in a way that makes us truly happy. It can be something as easy as buying a t-shirt with one of the bands you like or completely changing your diet. If you feel it is right and kind, make the change. You will thank yourself later.

2. When life knocks you down, get back up

Standing up for what you believe in is incredibly hard. It isn't easy to take the road less traveled by any means. It is even harder when everywhere you look there are signs saying "buy this product", "try this new diet", "this is only for boys" or "this is only for girls". By taking a stand, you are literally asking the world around you to come fight. You will ultimately get knocked down. One person verses everyone in your known circle? The odds are not in your favor at all. But! Have no fear! By you standing up and saying "This isn't right!" you will inspire other people to stand up and say "I agree______, this is not right!" If you keep on fighting and say "This isn't right." Your two person army will grow, and will become a four person army, then an eight person army, then a sixteen person army. It will keep growing until it reaches enough people to become the new cultural normality. It may take years, it may take days, but change will happen. You can make a difference. Even if you only impact one person, you completely changed that one person's world. That sometimes is all you have to do. And doing those few simple things make you a modern day deity.

3. "Have courage and be kind" ~Disney

Having courage and being kind are the only two ways that we can achieve a better world for our children. We live in a world where hate can be sent with a few clicks of a keyboard. If we speak with kindness and follow the golden rule of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." we will all live happily, and one day we will live in a world where all hate is gone. Why do we feel the urge to spread hate? Anyone anywhere at any kind can spread hate! It doesn't make you cool. I repeat "IT DOES NOT MAKE YOU COOL!" Only an insecure person would feel joy out of ruining someone else's day. Only a person with such low self esteem would feel any sort of gratification at taking away someone else's joy. Do you know what does make you cool, spreading joy. Bringing peace to those who are troubled. Smiling at strangers. Being kind to animals. Telling people you love them (and meaning it). Kissing your friends on the cheek. Let's destroy the idea that intimacy is reserved for sexual relationships. Holding the door open for someone. Hugging your friends. Holding hands with anyone at any time. Spreading love is the definition of cool. If we all act out of kindness and have courage, we will one day live in a world without war. We will live in a world without hate and miserable people. It will happen. Striving to make the change to become a person who is kind yet courageous is what being a god or goddess is all about.

4. Have Hope

Having hope when all hope seems lost makes you a modern day deity. Holding on to what good remains in you life when the pieces have fallen down all around you means that you are spreading light. Spreading kindness and joy is really what this world needs. Being positive is not an easy job. I know it is so incredibly hard. I know it doesn't seem possible, but when I have a bad day, I remember these things that help me get through whatever storm has brewed my way:

1. I'm alive.

2. I am not in immediate danger.

3. There is clean air to breathe.

4. I'm healthy.

Knowing these four simple facts make the day that seems impossible just a little bit easier.

Kindness and positivity go hand in hand, and being a modern day deity is all about being kind and positive. Doing what you think is right, no matter how hard it seems to be. It's about standing up for what others don't think they can. It's about being the voice for the voiceless. It's about pushing society to the limits, and then saying "that's not enough, we can do better." Being a deity is all about making the kindest, most logical decision. It all comes down to being the person you always dreamed you could be, today. Make the change. Be.U. and be kind.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
