For two years now, I've been fortunate enough to be a Resident Assistant at my college. This job isn't all fun and games, but it also isn't all punishment for breaking the rules. Being an RA, you have to be able to balance being a residence hall police officer while being the super cool individuals who host awesome programs for their residents. Here are a few things we want to tell you, our residents:
1. You only talk to us when you have a problem, which hurts but we like you anyway.
I have some residents that literally only text me when they are locked out of their room, or their suite is too cold. It occasionally pains me to open a text just to see that. I will bake brownies and cookies only to have no one show up to my room (cue sad Sarah McLachlan songs). But no matter what, I'll still keep baking in case someone does.
2. When you comment on how awesome our door decs/bulletin boards are, we secretly want to cry tears of happiness.
I spent hours Googling and searching Pinterest for cute bulletin boards/door decs that aren't too lame for college students. When I see people laugh at the jokes I put on them, I just can't stop smiling.
3. We don't enjoy getting you in trouble, and we wish you'd respect us enough to follow the rules.
We heard the "Chug! Chug!" when we were on rounds and walking past your room. And you know that we don't allow alcohol in the dorms. Y DO U MAKE US DO DIS?!
4. Please laugh at the puns we put on our flyers. Please. We're begging you.
Seriously, again, we research forever just because we want you to think that we're a cool RA. PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE'RE AWESOME.
There are definitely struggles we have, but we love our jobs more than most other jobs we could have on campus. Our residents all present a different challenge, and we love getting to meet new people every year!
