In light of the recent election, the protests that followed, and the grim forecasts for the future that are ravaging Facebook, I thought I would use this article as a way to focus on the good things still available to us. Whether you are in favor with the recent turn of the events or not, I think it is safe we all agree that we are indeed facing a divided time. Therefore, it can never hurt to be thankful for the good things we still have in our lives.

1. The sun still rises

I know this does not seem like much, but I think this is something many of us forget to be thankful for. Sunrise means a new day. Another day to make choices, to laugh, to love, and to hurt. A new day also means new possibilities and if we fail to take advantage of that, there is always another day.

2. Love is not a myth

Despite the hatred, violence, and grief that has plastered most media sources, love is not a myth. Look to your family or your closes friend, even your dog and you will find it there. Though most situations cannot be fixed with a kind word or even a tremendous hug, sometimes just knowing love still exists is enough to help us get through the night. Don’t take those who love your for granted or those you love. Tell them, in any way possible, show them and don’t waste your precious time only focusing on the bad.

3. Thanksgiving means Christmas is next!

If nothing else encourages, take comfort in the fact that Christmas comes right after Thanksgiving! While that may look different per person, remember that two thousand years ago a baby was born with the shadow of the cross over his manger. He came to deliver people from pain and suffering and darkness. He knows what it means to suffer and he is close to those who grieve. Take comfort in that.

4. Life is a gift

This gift is the greatest gift of all. If there is breath in your lungs, regardless of disabilities, gender, ethnicity or socio-economic status, rejoice! You are alive and that means you can make a difference. Whether it is at work, with your family or the world at large, if you are alive, you have a voice and a passion to work with. Life will never be easy, but that does not make any less of a gift.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
