Five Things That Made "Finding Dory" So Amazing

After "Finding Nemo," we all waited impatiently for a sequel. And waited. And waited. And we finally got it and it was everything it was cracked up to be. It was cute, funny, and touching, everything we expected from a Disney Pixar movie. But what I loved even more about this movie was its willingness to break barriers and be something completely new even being a sequel.

What I commend Pixar on most is:

1. The same-sex couple.

I know that this one isn’t new and we were all aware that it would be in the movie, but I loved that Disney Pixar was bold with their choice to feature a presumably lesbian couple in a scene. Though it was a quick and subtle scene I think it shows viewers that something that causes so much controversy did not distract from the movie at all and I think it is going to be a bridge for the introduction of the LGBTQIA+ community to be featured more often in other Disney Pixar movies.

2. Tackling the pollution problem.

For a few minutes of the movie Dory was swimming around with the plastic rings from a six pack of soda cans stuck to her. As I was watching I was thinking, “when is she going to get this off of her?” Then I realized that that was the point that Pixar is trying to make, that fish and other sea animals get caught in our trash and some may never escape them. I wish they had made this scene more apparent though by making it a set back in her journey so children and adults alike really got the message.

3. Heroes with disabilities.

There were multiple characters who were necessary for Dory’s journey in which she would not complete without them. Even Dory herself as a character has a disability and everyone doubts her to be able to survive on her own. She does not let her short term memory loss hold her back from finding her parents. Hank the octopus has seven tentacles and still helps Dory on her mission. Destiny the whale cannot see, but does everything in her power to help Dory through her friend Bailey whose echolocation doesn’t work well. And Becky, the non-verbal bird, whom no one wanted to put trust in was the reason that the movie ended happily. This shows children that no matter what is holding them back, they can do amazing things, too.

4. The transition from "Finding Nemo" to "Finding Dory."

There was an amazing overlap of the scene where Dory met Marlin that was included in both movies. I think the creators did a great job by incorporating Dory’s view of the story and Marlin’s. This is just something you have to see for yourself in the movie.

And as a bonus:

5. Baby Dory

Seriously, look how cute she is!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

singing
Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
