Many people suffer from chronic migraines. Those that don't, however, often have misconceptions about them. Here's a few things you should know:
1. A migraine is more than just a bad headache.
Migraines typically start on one side of the head, sometimes expanding to the other side. It makes our other senses seemingly go into over drive and things that don't normally bug us now will. Migraines can also make you physically ill.
2. We don't all know our triggers.
At some point in the process of getting diagnosed with chronic migraines we've likely had to keep a list of potential triggers. Every time we feel a migraine coming on we are supposed to write down everything we can possibly think of. What the weather is like, what we've eaten/drank recently, how much sleep have we been getting, our current stress levels - the list goes on. The idea is that we should begin to find a pattern. The hope is that once we discover the pattern we can reduce the frequency of migraines. The reality is many times it's difficult to tell when one migraine ends and another begins. Often times we don't realize we've been pain free until another starts. And sometimes there just isn't any logic to them.
3. Before you ask, yes, we've tried it.
If there is a treatment out there that has any chance of working it's likely we've tried it. Everything from medical treatments to acupuncture or even Botox. People who suffer from chronic migraines will try just about anything for relief.
4. They can cause you to not think clearly.
When we're fighting a migraine often times it feels like we're in a fog. Our brains can't seem to process things the way they should. We may ask you to repeat things or forget what you've said shortly after. Many of us write ourselves frequent notes so we won't forget everything.
