4 Things I Can't Seem to Get Right

The struggle is real.

4 Things I Can't Seem to Get Right

1. Writing down my passwords

Nowadays we need a password for everything. Facebook, emails, Instagram, online banking to name a few. Every time I need a new password this is my thought process. “Well if I use a password I always use then I don’t have to write it down. Oh but this one requires a number. I can use my favorite number.” A couple weeks later when I try to log back in, I get the infamous “The password you’ve entered is incorrect”. So I try five or six more times until I get locked out and have to request a temporary password. Keeping a log of all my accounts and passwords would be the sensible thing to do. But then again I’ll surely remember it for next time! Not.

2. Wearing sunscreen

The beginning of summer comes and I can’t wait for my skin to turn a golden brown color. Excited and overconfident in my skin’s ability to adapt, I bravely sit in the sun all day. I only apply SPF 15 sunscreen at about 10:00 A.M. “But I’m not that pale. And it’s barely 80 degrees. Also it’s kinda cloudy outside.” Wrong, wrong, wrong. Before I know it I’m a lobster who can’t move my limbs because my skin is the color of a fire truck and I am radiating heat. Ouch. I’ll wear more sunscreen next time…Unless I’m only going to be outside for a little while.

3. Getting enough sleep

No matter how tired I feel during the day, once my head hits the pillow I suddenly have energy. I can’t go to sleep no matter how hard I try. It’s one of those insomnia nights. First I scroll through all the apps on my phone. Second I usually watch a couple episodes on Netflix. When that doesn’t make me sleepy I get out of bed. Why? I have no idea. At least if I’m going to be awake I might as well be productive. Sometimes its organizing my closet. Other times I will take to my notebook to write. My personal favorite is organizing my life. AKA making a list of all of the things I need to do to get my life back in order. Of course by the time I get sleep it’s maybe 3:00 A.M. and I have to wake up in a few hours. So the next day I’m tired and thus the cycle begins again.

4. Putting away my clothes after washing them

I’ve become increasingly more self-sufficient since moving away from home. For example I actually wash my clothes. Okay so I wait until I’ve worn everything first and do laundry when I’ve run out of clean clothes. Anyways placing tide pods in the washer is a breeze. Drying is my favorite part because I can hold warm towels against my face. I don’t even mind folding, it keeps me busy while I’m trying to avoid doing my homework. Once all my clothes are nicely folded into the laundry basket I do nothing. The perfectly folded pile will stay there while I dig through it. By the end of the week everything is wrinkled. It is a mixture of clean and dirty clothes. I forget about most things at the bottom of the pile. Which is where the shirt I spent 30 minutes looking for has been. Soon enough my clean basket becomes my dirty basket and my pattern has continued. When will I get it right?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
