Four Stages Of Spring Break Planning

With all of the cold wind and weather, there isn’t anything in the world that I want more than spring break.

As the weeks pass by, there is nothing that can come any quicker than spring break. With all of the cold wind and weather that has been hitting our faces these past couple of days, there isn’t anything in the world that I want more than spring break. What could possibly sound better than the hot sun on our faces, our toes in the sand and the beautiful scenery of open water? So, in honor of spring break approaching rather quickly, here are the four stages every college student goes through to prepare for one of the best weeks of the year.

1. The idea

By far one of the biggest steps on the journey to spring break is the initial planning stage. It all starts with the simple idea of “I need to get out of here in order to actually make it to May.” This may be a completely different story if you go to school in places such as Florida or California, but with those of us stuck in the cold and snow, something has got to get us through the last couple months of school.

2. Coordination

Getting as many people to go along with your little scheme in order to knock the price down as low as possible is a necessity. As a college student, living life on your own is enough of a problem--let alone adding in a nice little trip along the way. So in light of that, one of the most important parts in getting a group together is finding the cheapest flight (or convincing your parents to let you use their car), hotel, and saving as much money as possible in order. After all, we have to still be able to afford our lives after the week in paradise is over.

3. Shopping

There is no doubt that one of the best stages when getting ready for spring break is the shopping process. Even before the flight is booked and you have a place to stay, there is nothing stopping us from going to the mall. After scavenging through our entire closet, most of us find that everything we bought last year just isn’t going to cut it for our new vacation. With this in mind, it works out perfectly when you find that a new swimsuit or wardrobe is just what you need to begin your travels.

4. Reality

When the real world sets in during this whole process, spring break can either be a marvelous thing or a deflated dream. On one hand, everything could have fallen right into place, and you will soon be traveling with all of your friends on a spectacular vacation. This means you can all finally switch your Sorel Boots and North Face parkas for flip flops and swimming suits. On the other hand, if all falls through, what was once a fantasy will turn into a nightmare when you find out that all your spring break will consist of is staying home and scrolling through pictures of everyone else on vacation.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
