There will come a moment in every college students' journey where they feel like they don't know what to do with their life. You can be the best planner, have a great resume, and still feel this way. Then comes the fear of uncertainty of what path to follow. This path can sometimes lead to changing your major, which can be a little daunting. Here are the stages students go through when they take the plunge.
1. Panic/Fear/Sadness
Most likely, you're panicking right now because all of the time and effort you put into your major has been wasted. Or at least it feels that way. At one point, you loved it. When times got rough, you pushed through saying, "Soon I'll have my dream job". Lately, the stats homework and case studying you've been reviewing feels more like a chore than a step towards a career.
2. Asking for advice from a close friend
Hey, you have to tell someone your problems before making this big decision (and telling your parents). Talking out your feelings and getting advice from a friend or close family member is always a good idea. They may now have to deal with you updating them every five minutes though.
3. Finally telling Your parents
You knew this step would happen eventually. It may seem like a good idea to wait until a holiday break (or the end of the semester) to tell your parents about your situation but, it won't end well. Having a conversation with them over the phone or a surprise visit is a good opportunity to spill the beans.
4. Making it official
You ate a tub of ice cream, cried to your close friend, and talked to your parents. You're feeling good about heading in a new direction. There is one last step: Talking to your advisor. You feel a little nervous but excited for the future.
