Four Places To Have Fun For Free

As a college student and someone trying my best to be prudent with money- spending, I am always looking for fun ways to spend my time without breaking the bank. Luckily I needn’t look further than central Massachusetts. Here are four places you can visit and have fun at for absolutely free…no catch!

1. Worcester Art Museum

My first visit to Worcester Art Museum was last Wednesday and it definitely will not be my last. For the entire month of August admission to the museum is free of charge and has several exhibits that are sure to catch your eye, including the Cats- in- Residence Program going on until September 4th. At this program, visitors are encouraged to enter the CatAviary to interact with the cats that are all rescue animals available for adoption from the Worcester Animal Rescue League. Other must- see’s that are only here for a limited time include; Knights, Jeppson Idea Lab, The Last Judgement Tapestry The Art of Combat, and Meow. From intricate Knight amour and swords to purrfect cat paintings, this museum has something for everyone and for the month of August is completely free!

2. Elm Park

Also located in Worcester on Highland Street, Elm Park is a 60 acre park famous for its bright red bridges, playground, tennis/basketball courts, and beautiful scenery. With plenty of walking- space, Elm Park is perfect for a summer stroll with friends or a place to play some games, whether it’s tennis or Pokemon- Go! With plenty of open grass, this park is also a great place to sit and read or have a picnic.

3. Cogshall Park

Located approximately half an hour away from Elm is Cogshall Park in Fitchburg. Known for its picturesque scenery, and walking trails, Cogshall is yet another ideal park to visit if you are looking for a fun way to spend your day without having to shell out money. Main attractions of this park include a gazebo with a beautiful view of the lake, children's playground, and wildlife that inhabit the park. In addition, much like Elm Park, Cogshall has many Pokestops for those that play Pokemon Go! including memorial benches located near the waterfront.

4. Leominster Summer Concert Series

Bringing together friends and family while also spotlighting immensely talented local musicians, the Leominster Summer Concert Series helps bring the community together and celebrate their love of music. Starting in May and going on until September, these summer concerts take place in downtown Leominster at Carter Park every Thursday from 6 pm- 8 pm. Not only does the series showcase a number of talented musicians, but there is also a variety of music ranging from Honkytonk, Soul, Jazz and everything in between. With a diversity of talent, and a friendly atmosphere to match, this summer series is not something you want to miss out on! Remember to bring a lawn chair and friends!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
