4 Netflix Flicks Worthy Of A Friday Night

In which lion robots and murderous children are in the same article -- my Netflix list is a bit of a jumbled mess, but at least there's something for everyone!

If you’re like me, Friday night is Netflix night at my apartment. Yet as exciting of a prospect as snuggling up in my favorite blanket and PJs with a bowl of steaming popcorn in my lap is, the hardest part of any decent ‘flix session is finding the proper show to watch. There are dramas, TV series, horror movies, and even some pretty good cartoons, enough to ensure that you never have to struggle to find the perfect show for your Friday night in. To give you a boost, here are four of the shows I keep in my list at all times, just to keep things interesting.

1. The Shannara Chronicles

This show has it all — gorgeous costumes, beautiful scenery and a theme song that really sells the series. Be immersed in this Lord of the Rings-esque universe, full of magic and quests and some pretty witty one-liners. And the cast — Austin Butler, Manu Bennet, Poppy Drayton — is pretty fantastic, though John Rhys-Davies as an elfin king is a bit strange from the point of view of a Gimli lover, but it works really, really well! If you’re looking for a somewhat-cheesy, engrossing viewing, try The Shannara Chronicles.

2. The Final Girl

“A real winner, this one,” I say somewhat sarcastically of this… thriller film? I… am not quite sure what this is supposed to be? With little to no backstory and an indiscernible setting, The Final Girl is a cheap attempt at a horror film, though in the way of comedy and entertainment, it really sells. And I mean, the cast is really stunning — Abigail Breslin, Wes Bentley, and Alexander Ludwig — but you can tell the actors don’t really know who their characters are any more than the audience does (seriously, what is up with Breslin and Bentley’s relationship?). The plot is fairly gripping, though it comes off as an underdone form of The Hunger Games. I’m probably not selling anyone on this idea, but hey, if you love bad horror movies and half-baked dialogue, join me in appreciating this marvel of a movie.

3. Hush

Okay, but let’s talk about decent thrillers now. This is coming from a person who really doesn’t find scary films all that entertaining: Hush kept me intrigued the entire time. Sure, the plot is a peppered with holes — why is a deaf author living in the middle of the woods by herself and who exactly is this unnamed stalker? — but if you ignore the lack of backstory, the concept is fascinating. Personally, I loved everything about Maddie, the main character — how she could fight despite her lack of hearing, how her skills as a writer helped her through the night. The movie uprooted you from your living room and threw you in the middle of a different person’s life and you sort of had to mentally pick your way through the plot. Not to mention A+ cinematography. Very well done.

4. Voltron: Legendary Defender

A TV drama and two thrillers later, we arrive at Voltron: Legendary Defender, personally

my favorite of the bunch. If you are a lover of anime or even animation of any kind, if you love quirky misfits who form a family of their own, if you love giant lion robots fighting in space, then gosh golly is this the show for you. Sure, it’s PG comedy and the sequence of events progress faster than you’d expect, but the characters are lovable and funny, literally none of the characters have time for sexism, you'll finally understand the references in Deadpool, and, hey, did I mention the giant lion robots fighting in space? What’s not to love?

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

Actually, Kylie Jenner, 2018 is the year of realizing things.

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?

6 Unrealistic Expectations Society Has For Young Adults

Don't let the thesaurus-inspired vocabularies in our résumés fool you. We're actually just big kids.

Well over four feet tall and 100 pounds in weight, many of us "young adults" of the world still consider ourselves children. Big, working, college-attending, beer-drinking children. We may live on our own, know how to cook noodles, and occasionally use a planner, but don't be fooled; the youthful tendencies that reside within us still make their way into our daily lives. From choosing to stay up until 3:00 a.m. playing video games on a school night to going out in 30 degree weather without a coat, we still make decisions that our parents and grandparents would shake their heads at in disappointment. So why are we expected to know exactly how to be a wise, professional, sensible adult? It's not that we're irresponsible (for the most part, anyway). It's that we are young, inexperienced, and still have the sought-after, enthusiastic mentality that we can do and be whatever we want, which has not yet been tarnished by the reality of the world. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that society has for young adults.
