You're at Target strolling up and down every possible aisle that might have anything to do with college and must-haves. You see multiple pens, notebooks, chairs, blankets, pillows...you freak out a little...you start picking up everything...you leave Target in debt. If this experience speaks to your soul, well welcome to the club. Shopping for back to college is an ordeal in itself.
It is much more than your usual back to school (aka high school). That only included pencils, paper, your classic Staples needs. College is Staples times 20 other places combined. When shopping back to college, you must be prepared for what is to come when you enter that first store. So to aid you on your intense journey of back to college, I am featuring five must-haves for survival in your perpetually small dorm.
1. Bedding
Let me emphasize the importance of bedding. Bedding is essentially your key to survival because of its association with sleep. I am personally the type of person who will pass out trying to pull all-nighters and needs seven to eight hours of sleep on a daily basis (Yes I do go to bed between the hours of 9 and 11 p.m.). The key is not only hours of sleep, but the comfort during said sleep. This is why bedding is so important, it must be cute yet functional.
Now some key tips for choosing the bedding include the predicted temperature of your dorm, if your dorm will be towards the warm side, then you may want to buy a quilt for comfort. If you plan to keep it on the colder side, a duvet is the better choice.
Next tip is the color scheme. Whether you think about it or not, subconsciously you have a color scheme, so use it. If you don't feel good vibes for bold bedding and would rather accentuate elsewhere, then get a neutral color bedding like gray, black or white.
This year, I chose to decorate my room with various shades of millennial pink (aka the color of the year and my life), so I chose a neutral white quilt so the color scheme isn't too overbearing.
2. Command Hooks
Command hooks have come a long way since last year. There are so many options in terms of style and weight they can hold that it's amazing. Use this! Hooks are key, because your room will be very small, and if it isn't, then you are beyond blessed. You will need to hang a lot of your stuff to make room elsewhere.
Command hooks allow you to hang with ease and nowadays style. They have hooks that can hold up to five pounds, which are essential for purses, and others with four hooks across which can be used for jewelry or as a key holder. If you don't know how many hooks you'll need, buy more! Some get damaged or fall off the concrete block wall during different seasons so you can never have enough.
3. Office Supplies
Classes are an essential part of college for many reasons. Therefore what you use for notes and studying are also the key to success. I know personally if I don't like the notebook I am using, I will not write very nice notes in it. I take pride in my Cambridge edition Mead notebooks and .38mm pens and pencils, which in turn means I will take pride in my note taking.
Just remember, you do not have to settle for generic Staples brand mechanical pencils. Sure, buy a pack for those times people will ask to borrow a pencil but also have your fancy pencils all to yourself for prime writing.
4. Decor
The saying, 'There's no place like home is right.' If your college room doesn't eventually start to feel like home, then something's wrong. The decor is a key part of giving you that "homey" happy feel to any room. Buy posters of your favorite quotes or people to brighten your mood when you see them. Hang artwork from friends or yourself to add your personal touch.
Put a rug to make it cozy and a comfy chair for lounging and studying. I can't tell you how much my fairy lights my first year made all the difference. Decorate any way you feel, and don't stop decorating until it feels right.
Those are all my must haves for a happy college experience.
Happy move in day!
