4 Things I Love About Southern California

It took a semester away to realize what makes SoCal so great

4 Things I Love About Southern California
Nathanael Jones

I just finished my first semester of college. Born and raised in sunny Southern California, I decided to tackle college in a completely different part of the country, the Midwest. While I love the Midwest and all that my rural college in Southern Indiana has to offer, there are many things I miss about SoCal. So, after a semester away, here are the four things I missed the most and the things I have taken for granted in the first 18 years of my life.

1. Flip Flop Weather All Year Round

This photo was taken on December 19. When most other parts of the country are fighting blizzards and trudging through knee deep piles of snow, those of us in southern California can keep our flip flops on and preserve our tan lines. With temperatures barely below the 50s even in the coldest winter months, flip flops are appropriate footwear year round and for that I am grateful. Long live my Rainbows! Featured in this photo, Rainbows are a SoCal footwear staple!

2. In-N-Out

"If you've been there, no explanation is necessary. If you haven't, none is adequate." This is a quote I often see underneath beautiful photos of natural wonders that leave you speechless. Though it's appropriate in that context, I believe it sufficiently describes the experience (yes, experience) of dining at an In-N-Out Burger. (In reality, it's a quote by Lou Holtz, former coach of many prestigious college football teams, from his time at Notre Dame University in northern Indiana.) In-N-Out truly delivers on it's promotional tagline, "Quality you can taste" in more ways than one. It's restaurants are truly quality. Every time my experience is fast, simple, and delicious. If you live in select locations in California, Texas, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and now even Oregon, you may be blessed to live within driving distance of an In-N-Out. If you do, consider yourself fortunate, as the rest of the nation can only dream...

3. Authentic Mexican Food

With Mexico just a few hours away, you'd better hope SoCal has some pretty authentic Mexican food. And it most surely does. From chains like King Taco (featured in the photo above) and Don Jose's to individual favorites like my local El Cantarito and Blue Agave, SoCal offers a plethora of delicious authentic options. This doesn't mean the Midwest doesn't offer authentic Mexican food, I'm sure there are some great places, I'm just still searching for them.

4. The Proximity of the Beach

Having access to beautiful beaches is truly incredible. Even though the Pacific Ocean is always a bit chilly, the beaches of Southern California (pictured here is Crystal Cove) offer many opportunities to relax and to play, to go on adventures and to people watch. At the beach one can surf, swim, read a book, relax in the sun, ride a bike, go for a run or a walk, get a suntan, make a sandcastle, have a photoshoot, watch a sunset, go kayaking... the list goes on and on. My personal favorite is watching the sunset. I have many fond memories from watching the sunset with my family or friends on a warm evening with the ocean breeze rustling my hair. It just doesn't bet much better than that.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
