4 Healthy Habits College Students Should Not Ignore

Though some consider their college years to be "practice" for adulthood, there's no reason that you can't start taking on your adult responsibilities right now. As these practices become habitual, you'll be ready for your new life once college comes to an end.

Wake up Early

"Early to bed and early to rise" is a mantra that most college students don't follow. While a late-night party or an all-night study session is okay every now and then, try to make a habit of waking up early. According to certain studies, people that wake up earlier are better at solving problems, more proactive, and tend to be more optimistic. As you start to wake up earlier, you'll be surprised at how much more productive your days are.

Start Eating Healthy

In addition to getting enough sleep and rising early, it's important to start eating healthy in college. Though many students like to binge on everything from fast food to snacks and sweets, this isn't the best fuel to give your body. If you haven't already started cooking your own meals, now is the time to do so. Even if you have a meal plan, taking the time to practice cooking healthy foods will prepare you for life after college.

Visit the Dentist

Without your parents scheduling dental appointments for you, you may be tempted to neglect your oral health. However, avoiding the dentist now may be the start of a negative habit that follows you for the rest of your life. Even if you'd rather skip your dental cleanings, these are an important part of taking care of your teeth. Making regular appointments now will keep your pearly whites healthy throughout college and as you enter the working world. Be sure to visit the dentist regularly and take care of your teeth.

Exercise Often

Many colleges have gyms and classes that are free to their students. While some students take advantage of these amenities, others skip out on exercise to hang out with friends or to go to parties. Avoid the temptation to miss physical fitness and find a way to fit regular exercise into your daily schedule. With a regular exercise routine, you'll stay in shape and have more energy to get through your academic responsibilities.

College is the time to explore who you are and enjoy yourself, but don't forget about easing your way into the world of adulthood. Keep this guide in mind as you form new habits that will keep you healthy today and in the future.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
