If you're a grandma like me, one of the best feelings is when the plans you drunkenly made with pals for Saturday night gets cancelled. I enjoy staying in curled up with ice cream and a new show to watch just as much as I enjoy a night out drinking with friends. When I do get the chance, I like watching TV and really appreciate a well-made made series that sucks you in and forces you to watch a whole season in one night. I've put together a list of shows, new and old, that have done just that. Watch at your own risk—you will get sucked in.
1. "Stranger Things," 2016
Created by the extremely talented Duffer brothers, "Stranger Things" is a fairly new Netflix Original series that will make sci-fi haters reconsider their genre priorities. Winona Ryder makes her comeback in this thrilling show that is set in the 80s. Shot in Georgia, the story focuses on Will Byers, a young boy who goes missing in a small town. I won't go into detail, but it's a crazy, inspiring journey to figuring out what happened to him. The cast is phenomenal, and the plot is enthralling. Be prepared to be able to watch more than one episode, because you won't want to stop after just one.
2. "Portlandia"
"Portlandia" is one of the funniest shows out there in my opinion. Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are geniuses in this sketch comedy show that takes place in the quirky, hipster town of Portland, Oregon. The two play several different characters and portray a heightened and exaggerated version of the types of people and situations one might find in Portland. I watched all the seasons on Netflix in a week!3. "Unreal," 2015
"Unreal" is a scripted show on Lifetime that is quite a treat for reality show fanatics. It surrounds a fictional reality show called "Everlasting," a satirical version of "The Bachelor." The show gives viewers a behind the scenes of what happens when the cameras aren't on. You really get to see how manipulative and even sadistic producers and show creators can be in order to produce drama and "good" television. Every episode leaves off on a cliffhanger and you won't believe how far the characters, both producers and contestants, will go to stay on top of the game.
4. "Broadchurch," 2013
"Broadchurch" is a British crime/murder mystery unlike any I've ever seen. Similar to "The Killing," "Broadchurch's" premise visits a small coastal town in England in which a young boy's body is found on the beach. The brooding, handsome and turbulent detective, Alec Hardy, is called in and the findings of his investigation sends the town and it's people into a frenzy. The acting and cinematography is just as phenomenal as the plot itself!
