The millennials are the demographic born between the early 1980s to the early 2000s. This is the generation that was raised during the digital age, and as such, reflect many of the cultural changes that occurred during that time. Many characteristics have been attributed to this age group, but their strong likes and dislikes are making an impact on the society as a whole. Here are some of the more notable trends among the millennials.
Mobile Communications
Millennials live their lives on their phones. From connecting to each other, to ordering food to scoring concert tickets, everything is done via the internet. Staying connected with others, via Instagram or Snapchat, is an integral part of their lives, and they look to these social media sites to provide information for daily living.
Vaping
Vaping is a popular activity among millennials, and many use it as a way to relax from hectic schedules and demands of everyday life. Vape kits allow them to take their flavored e-liquids anywhere they go, to enjoy a moment of quiet relaxation during a busy day or while out with friends. They are more likely to experiment with the wide choice of flavors available for enthusiasts. Vaping has replaced going outside for a smoke on their breaks, and can be done anywhere without disturbing other people in the area.
Interactive Travel Experiences
Millennials seek to maximize their travel time and money, which means they prefer experiences that are individualized to suit their unique tastes or somehow change their perceptions of themselves or their lives. The usual travel options don’t attract them, and they often choose travel destinations that allow them to enjoy their preferred hobbies, whether it is hiking, kayaking, rock-climbing, or other activity.
Supporting Causes
The daily connectivity of the millennials makes them interested in, and often involved in, popular causes that make the news each day. Having grown up during an economic downturn makes them keenly aware of disparities in social justice and income opportunity. They are quick to join with their friends and co-workers to support worthy causes that can make the world a better place for themselves, and for the society at large. They are often particularly interested in festivals and other activities that are organized for particular causes.
Young people in the 18 to 34 year age bracket have grown up in a world that is much different than previous generations. A number of factors have contributed to their drive toward individual expression, work-life balance and a deep interest in making the world a better place. Businesses are beginning to understand and appreciate the qualities of the current demographic and are working to market to their unique needs.
