In college, we all pick a nitch and study within that realm of classes. The wonderful thing about it is that we have a wide range of things to choose from. (Because we will be doing it for the rest of our lives...duh duh duhhhhhhh) Lucky me, I chose psychology. When I first took the intro class I often thought it was crazy however, when I took other psych classes, I loved it. So, that's where I am. When people ask me my major I tell them and I often get the same questions. Here are the most common misconceptions about psychology:
1. "So you're going to work with the crazy people?"
The word "psycho" might be in psychology but the field isn't necessarily about "crazy" people. Rude. Psychology is about why we do the things we do, learn the way we do and so on. There are many different careers that focus on psychology. Educate yourself.
2. "Psychology is not a science."
Actually, it isn't a proven fact whether it is a science or not. However, all of your General Education sciences are FOR MAJORS. Feel free to read The Practice of Psychology: Art or Science?. Psychologists conduct experiments and spend a bunch of time researching. In my personal opinion, it's a science.
3. "Psychology is easy."
Psychology may seem easy but sometimes it isn't. Psychology is all about bold-face terms, memorizing famous psychologists, and all of the theories that go along with them. It gets confusing.
4. "You get to skip math classes."
No, no you don't. I had to take Probability and Statistics along with Calculus. Then you have to take Psychology based math classes. Try again.
Whether you're on board and support psychology majors or not, psychology is important. To everyone. Everyday. Psychology helps others understand the whats and whys of life. We are eager to help others and eager to learn the ins and outs of the brain in order to do so. I'm not judging what you're majoring in so don't hate on mine.
