There exists a plethora of books out there as well as so many stunning authors that change the way people think about the world. But people often forget about another art form, that of the short story. These short stories will have you enthralled and may actually teach you something about life. While there are thousands of excellent short stories out there, here are four that stand out particularly strong for me.

4. John Steinbeck's "The Chrysanthemums"

This story holds its meaning in its subtly. It does not draw one in outright but it still pulls the reader in with its beautifully crafted command of language.

3. Ray Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope"

A chilling sci-fi akin to The Twilight Zone, "Kaleidoscope" will give you a perspective on death and mortality in a way only Bradbury can

2. J.D. Salinger's "For Esmé– With Love and Squalor"

This historical fiction plays into some of Salinger's experiences in the war. The style is uniquely beautiful and wonderfully crafted. A quite unforgettable story.

1. James Baldwin's "Sonny's Blues"

A perfectly crafted story filled to the brim with metaphor and deeper meanings. It speaks to the times and feelings of the African American experience. It was the main reason I started writing and pulbishing short stories.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
