Sometimes, it just takes us a few times to get something.
Seeing the 1975 live is not one of these instances.
This summer, the band announced that they were adding 2016 tour dates for North America and Mexico. So, I of course had to obtain tickets. I'll admit I splurged a little and bought floor tickets, I'm more of a lawn kind of person, but what's a girl to do when her favorite band was en route.
In November I attended their concert at Eastern Michigan's Convocation Center located on their college campus, which I'd never stepped foot on until this concert. Here are some of my thoughts on the venue, band and their sound.
The Venue
The venue was easy to find for the most part until I took the wrong street and ended up in Ann Arbor, which was a tough thing for me since I obviously bleed green and white. When we arrived a line of tents and blankets was already set up meaning people had wanted to get close. We walked towards the end and got into the venue surprisingly fast which is always a good thing when you are wearing just a leather jacket and t-shirt in the middle of November! Parking was free and within walking distance of the hall.
The Opening Act
Disclaimer: I am entirely biased, wouldn't you be too if you saw your fav band.
Personally, I was a little shocked at their opener. I can't even recall her name. Her voice was good but her style was completely different than the 1975's punk, indie rock mixture. I didn't care for her personally, but this only fueled my want to for the 1975's setlist even more. Props to her though, she sang her butt off and you could tell she was happy to be there.
THE 1975 Still Sounds the Same
In my eyes, they never truly loose their luster. Every time I see them perform it's like I am 16 again jammin' at the Filmore with my mom in our nosebleed seats that she surprised me with! They always sound true to their albums and records. Every time they play SEX I still dance a little crazier than one probably should. I am also always looking forward to whatever song they play next, I still know almost every single lyric and I still am infatuated by the way that Matty doesn't give a crap about drinking an entire bottle of wine or chain smoking a whole pack of cigarettes on stage. There is something special about this band and even if you are reading this, I am not giving them the justice that they truly deserve for their beautifully written and performed music.
Somebody Else
Every time, every single dang time this song plays I cry a little inside. It's not a sad cry but a cry of feeling understood. The song is just so pure and full of Matty's raw emotions that it is almost impossible to not relate this to each and every person's own experience with love. In a crowd full of rando strangers this song makes me feel a little bit closer to each of them.
See It For Yourself
I can't promise you the concert of your life or the best band that you've ever seen if you purchase a ticket to their show the next time they come on tour, but what I can promise you is a band that will make you feel something that you maybe haven't felt in awhile: just pure love and togetherness.
Now here's some crappy photos I took off my Phone (I was on the floor, so please be kind.) Enjoy!
