Girls who grow up on farms are raised to be tough and not take crap from anyone. They spend countless hours in the fields and spending time with the animals. I was lucky enough to be raised as one of these girls. Here are some of the thoughts that passed through my mind during my time spent on the farm.
1. I’ll take a field over a subdivision any day.
2. I want something from town but it’s so far away.
3. Is what I want worth the one trip to town?
4.Why did they plant corn for feed?!?! I wanted sweet corn!
5. Why did Grandpa plant corn in the field right next to my house. Now I actually have to go outside to wait for the bus.
6. That person is nice, they waved at me. Wait who was that?
7. I wish I could take my dad somewhere where he doesn’t know everyone…
8. Moving hay beats lifting weights any day.
9. Hey look, my cousins are catching tadpoles in the ditch at my house!
10. I hope my cousin doesn’t push me in.
11. It’s a nice day and not windy, I think I’ll wash my car.
12. Why do I even wash it? My uncle must know because he is plowing the fields now. Such a waste of time.
13. I wonder if my school will accept being stuck behind a tractor as a valid reason for being tardy.
14. Well I can’t pass the tractor, with my luck it's either my uncle or someone who knows my dad.
15. I wonder how mad my school would be if I drove a tractor to school.
16. Thank god it’s finally beet season.
17. My uncle grows the best sugar beets. They are a great snack…
18. Well sh**, the cows are out.
19. I hope the bull doesn’t decide to charge me.
20. I’m going to be the first female farmer in my family.
21. Ahhhhhh manure, my favorite!
22. I wonder how many passes the crop duster will make before it hits my house.
23. I don’t think I’ll ever be done weeding this field.
24. Crap! I lost the knife to cut the bailing twine!
25. How am I supposed to clean the stall when the horse won't move?
26. Is that sh** or mud? Mmmm...definitely not mud.
27. Cool, you have cowboy boots. Have they been caked in mud yet? I didn’t think so!
28. Look my uncle is irrigating! I’m going to go say hi!
29. Hey bulls, I don’t care which one of you is more manly just shut up!
30. It’s 1:30 a.m., why does it sound like there is a cow outside my window?
31. Oh, it’s because the cows are out… again…
32. Is that a pig in the yard? Since when did the neighbor get pigs?
33. If you don’t know what a tractor pull is, you are missing out!
34. I wonder how many people get lost before they find my house?
35. I wouldn’t trade this for the world!
Looking out my window and seeing a field is definitely something I miss, but the memories I made farming are ones I will cherish forever.
