Career Faqs

Some people say that college is the best four years of your life, and for the most part, many people would agree with them. College is when you finally begin to get an idea for who you really are as an individual, on your own and figuring life out for yourself one little step at a time. You do your laundry on your own, you figure out your next meal without your mom cooking it for you and yelling at you to come out of the hobbit-hole you call a room and for the first time, you are free to make the grades that come with the work you choose to put in.

However, college can very easily become a little "too" work. Yes, college is a privilege. Yes, college is there to further your education and to allow you to have all your hopes and dreams come to life in later years, but college is also a time to explore and to have fun before the nitty-gritty of life really kicks in. So, to make sure that college isn't all work, we've come up with a little list so you can have some fun with college as well. As the great Wiz Khalifa once said, "Work hard, play hard."

  1. Go on a weekend road trip with friends.
  2. Pull an all-nighter trying to study for midterms or finals.
  3. Become addicted to coffee.
  4. Travel to a different country.
  5. Change majors five times.
  6. Debate dropping out because of one class you need for your major.
  7. Do the Disney college program.
  8. Go skydiving.
  9. Go to a frat party.
  10. Hike a mountain.
  11. Have one stereotypical college spring break.
  12. Go scuba diving.
  13. Go to a concert for your favorite band.
  14. Go to Waffle House at 3 a.m.
  15. Learn to play an instrument.
  16. Get a tattoo.
  17. Go to tailgates and sport events.
  18. Take a class that’s outside of your major.
  19. Make a friend who doesn’t go to your university.
  20. Try out Greek life!
  21. Join a club that pushes you outside of your comfort zone.
  22. Do a study-abroad program.
  23. Spend one semester taking summer classes.
  24. Surprise your family by coming home for a weekend, unplanned.
  25. Go to a rodeo (or a bull-riding competition, just trust me).
  26. Streak through a popular campus hangout spot. (PSA: this is just a suggested list of things to do, we are not responsible for you getting caught by the good ol’ campus police, but we will wholeheartedly laugh if you do)
  27. Run for a leadership position in a club you’re passionate about.
  28. Try every food item in the dining hall.
  29. Make cookies and pass them out to procrastinating students in the library.
  30. Dance on a table.
  31. Sneak into the school’s football stadium at night.
  32. BAR CRAWL.
  33. Join a random protest.
  34. Take full advantage of all the student discounts you get.
  35. Try not to fail out.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
