First day of classes are always a good time. From running around the campus trying to figure out where your classes are to almost hyperventilating when you read the syllabus and wonder where you will find time to do all the work. At the end of the day though, you're basically back to the old routine and feel right at home on campus again. Here's all the thoughts that run through people's heads during the first day of class.

  1. Oh my god why did I do this to myself, 9 AMs are basically as bad as 8 AMs
  2. Must get out of bed, must look nice for first day of classes…
  3. Why is it so early?!
  4. Oops forgot to buy new notebooks
  5. Guess I’m using the second half of my old notebooks
  6. 30 minutes until class, get yourself together
  7. I have time for breakfast right?
  8. First meal in the dining hall and it’s already terrible
  9. Oh no, I only have 15 minutes until class starts!
  10. Where is this class anyways?
  11. If I leave the dining hall right now, I can make it with ten minutes to spare
  12. I’ve never had class in this room!
  13. It’s so crowded…
  14. There’s a free seat!
  15. No no no no no! Don’t sit there, I want to sit there!
  16. Ugh time to find another empty seat
  17. Found one! Just gotta climb over all these people now
  18. What happened to syllabus week? Did not plan on taking this many notes today
  19. Oh yay I have a writing assignment due the next time we meet!
  20. What am I supposed to do during the two-hour break I have?
  21. Should I just go to my room?
  22. The next class is literally on the other side of campus though…
  23. I guess I’ll just go to the dining hall again and watch Netflix
  24. Thank god I only have two classes today; I need to ease back into school
  25. Day one and I’m already exhausted
  26. I can’t believe I have to do this all over again tomorrow
  27. At least it’s a two day week, though
  28. Is it just me or did dining hall food get worse?
  29. OMG! There’s my friend! Haven’t seen her in forever!
  30. I wonder who else I’ll see today
  31. Group chat is lit when you’re on campus
  32. Can’t wait to be reunited with everyone at dinner
  33. One day back and it feels like I never left it in the first place
  34. It’s been an exhausting day…
  35. Can’t wait to crawl into bed and finally sleep

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
